Hello,
I passed the AFZ exam yesterday in Innsbruck!
Here're my feedback:
- I only prepared myself using Radiocheck.at and everything worked well.
- Tempo of the examiner during the radio practice part was pretty high. I went as "zuhörer" during the exam session in December 2025 and the tempo was clearly slower. We were 4 participants and 1 failed. One of the reasons was because he was too slow to answer.
- NOTAM and quizz were exactly like what the ones you find on radiocheck.at
- For non German native speakers, about the NOTAM translation: German is not my mother tongue (B1 or B2) and I was really afraid of that part. What I did to train myself is to create flashcards using an app, and every word that I wasn't comfortable with, I created a flashcard accordingly. For example: VOR -> UKW-Drehfunkfeur, to comply -> einhalten, to assign -> zuweisen, territory -> Hoheitsgebiet, etc.
I did grammatical errors during the exam: der/die/das/den/dem/..., "während diese Zeit" instead of "während dieser Zeit", wrong words placement, etc..
But for my understanding, what is important is to know the key words and to build a comprehensive translation, despite the grammatical errors. It worked for me at least and I didn't learn word by word every 33 NOTAMs.
So thank you radiocheck, I can and will definitely recommend it!
Good luck everyone!
Cheers,
David
Oh wow, that’s really interesting! We’ve never looked at it from that perspective. That someone has to learn German vocabulary to pass the English-translation test. That’s actually strange.
It’s a shame that Austria still doesn’t offer a purely English radiotelephony certificate (like the BZF E in Germany). That makes it incredibly difficult to get an EFZ if you aren't very good in German. But it seems that you are good enough! Congratulations!
